English:
This time only a story from Mandy about my research in Uganda. Stefan will write in two weeks when he is in the Azores.
On 15 October the three guys and I arrived in Kampala. Although we tried to be as less outstanding as we could be, it was almost impossible to do that as a 'white tourist'. So the words Muzungu and Money, Money were quickly added to our vocabulary. After a few days I got used to the fact that people were shouting, touching and squeezing me, but still it was a weird experience to feel like some kind of celebrity. We stayed one day in Kampala were we met Per, one of the stakeholders in our project. He gave us some good advices about the project and about the Ugandan culture which we could use in the rest of our research. From his nice office we got a car to Kasese, where we arrived 6 hours later. The next day in Kasese we met the municipality members who would accompany us during our stay. Our new friend Didas could tell us everything about the area and had some good advices regarding our interview questions. He knew a lot about the culture and about the people living in Kasese and next to that: he loved football... Even as the other guys I was with... And I've known that for 4 evenings.. So.. now I know a lot about Ronaldo, Ozil, van Persie, Arsenal and of course Manchester United .At that moment I definitely experienced that I was the only girl in the group. Next to that, I neither was one of the guys in wearing shorts (that's definitely not comfortable to wear among people who think it is weird to wear shorts for a girl), talking about women and peeing against trees (Sometimes I really wanted to be a guy just so I didn't had to go to the toilets). In the contrary they treated me as a queen and we've counted 14 proposals from different men ;).
The most fun part was to talk about the differences between men & women. During these conversations all the Ugandan guys found out that the guys in 'the West' were softies and had to oblige the woman to work in the kitchen and get children. So when I told that I don't want children before my thirties, they made a lot of fun of me :). Also the issues about religion were nice to discuss. Federico should never have told that he didn't believe in God. Bad news travels fast and so all the members of the municipality were asking him about his God. For the people who wanted to go to the church we could join Didas to his church. And I really have to say: if the churches in the Netherlands where as nice and enthusiastic as this one was I would go to the church more often.
We experienced a lot of other situations which were surprising for us. The dancing in the clubs (where everyone dances to the mirrors and are really really good dancers), the thoughts about homosexuality, the discussions about witchcraft, the way people react when you ask for something (just nodding, no yes or no or some other word), the cry the Ugandans give when they are surprised and the way they interact with each other with so less words. But although those things were surprising, it was nice and interesting to experience all those differences.
Because everyone was so friendly and open, we have got to know a lot of people. Not only Ugandans but also international people who try to do the best things they can to help the people and try to develop the area a bit. Even when they are not really sure if there work will be a durbale development, they still try to help. I'm proud of the people who change their lives for others, even for a short time and I really hope to be one of these people once.
Eventually our research went really well. We have done a lot of individual & group discussions where we received a lot of information about the preferences in the houses, about the affordability of houses for them and about the possibility of biogas & solar panels. The houses will be probably be build in 2014 and with our research we hope we can contribute to affordable and especially livable houses for the nice people whom we spoke with.
